It has roughly a 430hp 5.2 V10 derived from a Lamborghini Gallardo. The engine is found in the wonderful R8. You can buy one for 20k. Finally it is as luxurious as Louis XIV's castle. What's not to love about this car? I would personally love to DD one.

If you have $40k to spend on a car, then this is a great car.

Not sure. If a Ferrari costs $4,000 to operate for a year and only $835 for normal maintenance I assume it has to be less than that right?

Goddammit. The V10 in the S6 is not from a Lamborghini or derived from a Lamborghini engine. The 5.0L "Lambo" engine in question isn't even from Lamborghini - Audi designed it for the Italians and still makes the crank case and block which they then ship to Italy for Lamborghini to bolt stuff onto.

The 5.2L Audi engine had 90mm bore spacing whereas the Lambo engine (designed by Audi) had 88mm bore spacing in 5.0L form. When the new 5.2L V10 engine for the Gallardo was released it was the Audi 5.2L with different oiling, crank, and engine management systems.

SO, you can certainly say the S6 had a V10 that Lamborghini used, but you can't say it's a Lamborghini engine.

maybe it cost me about like $50~ at walmart for a oil change on my GT that was with Mobile 1 Full Synthetic.

I am guessing it would be closer to $100. This car drinks oil like a quart every 1500 miles. But you have to consider total oil changes are less periodic in this than most cars. Such as my S10 which is every 3k

You were also able to get the 5.2L V10 in the S8 as well.

And I'd rather have the S8.

I've driven this engine before, at least - in the Gallardo.

It is glorious. Brutal and rumbly and violent.

This and an E39 M5 have similar power and similar operating costs, and can be purchased for similar money. I drove both and prefer the M5 by a significant margin. The only two things that are better on the S6 are (1) AWD if you do a ton of driving in snowy or rainy conditions and can't afford or don't want to deal with snow tires and (2) the newer Nav system (which at this point is not all that new).

Unless you're a real Audi-phile I would cross-shop an E39 M5. I would stick with the 2001+ cars as they have several upgrades.

really? Color me surprised.. Wouldn't have expected a V10 audi to be similar to the E39 in maintenance costs. E60 M5 would sound more likely.

I think they are close. The E39 is about 5 years older. I guess it depends on whether you think $1k/year +/- is a big difference.

the E39 and the S62 V8 are pretty sturdy if maintained well, many of them are still daily driven. Speaks pretty highly of the Audi I guess.

Word. My E39 M5 had almost 100k miles when I sold it. Since I'm OCD about maintenance the car performed as well as it did when new (or better - it had been breathed on somewhat). And the chassis was still entirely free of squeaks and rattles, which is frankly even more amazing. Everyone should own an E39 chassis BMW in their life, it's that good.

I gave up on my search of a lemans blue on caramel 2001+ M5 and got an E90, which sometimes I do regret. I certainly plan on picking one up down the road. E39's absolutely eat miles on the highway, which makes it even more impressive how well they handle back roads.
